"Recycled gold" sounds lovely on a product page, but it's fair to ask what it really means. Where does recycled gold actually come from, and is it as good as the newly mined kind? Here's the honest answer, and why it's part of how we make our jewellery.

What is recycled gold?

Recycled gold is gold that has already been used somewhere else, then reclaimed and re-refined so it can be made into something new. Here's the part most people don't realise: gold is almost endlessly recyclable. Unlike a lot of materials that degrade each time they're reprocessed, gold can be melted down and refined again and again without losing any of its quality. The gold in a ring today could once have been a coin, a watch, or a piece of jewellery from generations ago. It's one of the oldest recycled materials in the world.
So recycled gold isn't a lesser version of the real thing. Once it's refined, it's chemically identical to freshly mined gold. Same purity, same beauty, same forever quality.

Where does recycled gold actually come from?

Reclaimed gold generally comes from a few key places. Old and unwanted jewellery is a big one, the pieces people trade in, inherit, or simply no longer wear. Manufacturing scrap is another, the offcuts and filings left over when jewellery is made, since even the tiniest shavings are collected and reused. And a surprising amount comes from electronics, as gold is used in small quantities in things like circuit boards and connectors, which can be recovered and refined.
Once collected, all of this gold is sent to a refinery, melted down, purified, and brought back to the same standard as any newly mined gold, ready to become something new.

Why we use recycled gold at Kate & Kole

Mining gold takes a real toll. It's energy-intensive, it disturbs land and waterways, and it can carry a heavy social cost too. Choosing recycled gold means we're not adding to that demand. We're making beautiful pieces from gold that already exists, rather than asking for more to be pulled from the ground.
That's why we use recycled silver and gold and lab-grown diamonds to create our jewellery, and wherever possible, we limit mining and new material. It's a small choice that adds up, and it's part of how we make our pieces a little more consciously, without ever compromising on quality.

Is recycled gold lower quality?

In a word, no. Because gold is purified during refining, recycled 9ct and 18ct gold meets exactly the same standard as newly mined gold of the same carat. You genuinely cannot tell the difference, because there is no difference. What you can tell is where it came from, and that's the whole point.

Yes. During refining, gold is purified back to its original standard, so recycled 9ct or 18ct gold is identical in quality to newly mined gold of the same carat. There's no difference in purity, durability or appearance.
